Jordan 2-2 Nigeria Player Ratings

  • The Super Eagles closed out their four-nation invitational campaign with silverware, but not without late drama, as the Super Eagles were held to a 2–2 draw by Jordan at the Mardan Stadium on Tuesday night.

Goals from Moses Simon and debutant Emmanuel Fernandez overturned an early deficit to put Nigeria in control before a second-half lapse allowed Jordan claw their way back into the contest. Despite the dropped lead, the result was enough to seal the tournament title, giving  head coach Eric Chelle a productive window to assess his squad.

The game showed how much the team can play without their top players.  However, here is a detailed matchday rating of each player.

Player Ratings

Francis Uzoho – 6/10

Reliable for much of the first half, intercept a Jordan cross in the 8th minute, made a crucial save in the second half, Uzoho could do little about Mousa Al-Tamari’s clinical opener. His evening was unfortunately cut short in the 57th minute after sustaining an injury during a brave clearance.

Bright Osayi-Samuel (Right Back): 7/10

Bright Osayi-Samuel delivered one of Nigeria’s most disciplined defensive performances, tasked with containing Jordan’s key threat, Mousa Al-Taamari. Osayi pushed attacks  on several occasions and finally provided the assist for Emmanuel Fernandez's goal.

Emmanuel Fernandez (Centre Back): 8/10

Making his first senior start, the Glasgow Rangers defender was a revelation. Aside from his defensive duties, he helped the team attacking wise  scoring Nigeria’s second goal in the 41st minute

Igoh Ogbu (Centre Back): 6.5/10

A solid presence alongside Fernandez, Ogbu dealt well with the physical threat of Baha'a Faisal, and even most of the aerial threats from Jordan. However, failed to control his backline which led to several defensive flaws especially Jordan's second-half equalizer.

Zaidu Sanusi (Left Back): 6/10

Sanusi was determined but occasionally struggled with his final balls. He remained disciplined defensively against a Jordanian side that targeted the wings with pace and aimed for crosses, however, he allowed the Super Eagles to face threats from his wing which eventually led to the equalizer.

Frank Onyeka (Midfield): 7.5/10

The "Tank" lived up to his nickname, breaking up play and providing the platform for Nigeria's transitions. He did the natural box-to-box for the Super Eagles, joining the center backs to do the defensive duties and also had few shots at the opposition half.  He was replaced late in the game by Philip Otele.

Raphael Onyedika (Midfield): 6.5/10

Showed flashes of brilliance in possession and helped dictate the tempo in the first half, including his goal which was disallowed for offside. However, his influence waned as Jordan intensified their midfield press in the second period, he continually made the midfield look big and allowed Jordan to dominate with ease.

Ademola Lookman (Winger): 7/10

Did not get a goal or assist for himself, but Lookman’s movement and directness kept the Jordanian defense on their toes. His shot was deflected to Moses Simon who then scored Nigeria’s first goal of the match. Aside from that, he had few brilliant moments and was the primary creative hub for much of the game before the late tactical shifts.

Moses Simon (Winger): 8.5/10 (Man of the Match)

Simon was Nigeria's most potent threat against Jordan. He scored the equalizer in the 26th minute, marking goals in back-to-back games, his cross to Raphael Onyedika who later made a shot to the net was later ruled out for offside, he remained a constant thorn in Jordan's side until his 81st-minute substitution.

Yira Sor (Forward): 6/10

Sor’s pace was seen in the game, but he struggled to find the clinical edge required. He worked hard off the ball before making way for Wilfred Ndidi as a tactical substitution.

Akor Adams (Forward): 6.5/10

Adams used his physicality well to hold up play but lacked the chances he enjoyed in the previous match against Iran. His presence, however, occupied two defenders, creating space for Simon and Fernandez to score, meanwhile, he didn’t find a way to break down the Jordan defense who always kept him out of the ball's reach.

The Substitutes

Adebayo Adeleye (Goalkeeper): 6/10

Called into action earlier than expected, Adeleye was steady, made very good saves in the short period, but will be disappointed to have conceded the 77th-minute equalizer to Mohammad Al-Daoud, many would say it was a goalkeeper's carelessness.

Wilfred Ndidi (Midfield): 6.5/10

Introduced to provide leadership stability, Ndidi helped regain control of a chaotic midfield during the final 30 minutes.

Alex Iwobi (Midfield): 4/10

What should have been a celebratory 98th cap was marred by a straight red card in stoppage time for violent conduct. While he added flair upon entry, the lack of discipline at the death severely impacted his rating.

Samuel Chukwueze & Philip Otele: N/A

Both entered the game in the 81st minute. While Otele earned his senior debut, neither had sufficient time to significantly influence the scoreline.

Eric Chelle (Head Coach): 5/10

Eric Chelle earns a 5/10 for leading Nigeria to the tournament title and making a bold call by starting Emmanuel Fernandez, who rewarded that trust with a goal. However, drawing a 64th ranked nation and the late defensive lapses and the indiscipline that led to Alex Iwobi’s red card slightly reduce his rating.
