Super Falcons Thrash Comoros 5-0 to Seal 7-0 Aggregate Win, Reach Third Round of Olympic Qualifiers

  • Date: October 14, 2026
  • Competition: CAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Los Angeles 2028), Second Round, Second Leg
  • Venue: Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne

The Super Falcons are marching on. Nigeria's senior women's national team produced a ruthless second-half display to thrash Comoros 5-0 in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic qualifier at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Tuesday, sealing a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory and a place in the third round of the CAF qualifying series.

Toni Payne and Uchenna Kanu scored two goals apiece, while Christy Ucheibe converted a late penalty, as interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen recorded his second win in charge of the 10-time African champions.

Frustration Before the Floodgates

For 40 minutes, this looked like one of those nights. The Super Falcons dominated from the first whistle but could not find a way through. Gift Monday missed a clear chance in the 10th minute, Uchenna Kanu twice crashed efforts against the crossbar, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade was forced off injured in the 29th minute, replaced by Folashade Ijamilusi.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 41st minute, and it was worth the wait. Kanu pressed Comoros goalkeeper Aicha Said into a costly mistake, won the ball, and teed up Payne to slot home. 1-0 at the break, 3-0 on aggregate, and the tie was effectively over.

Second-Half Blitz

Whatever Eguavoen said at half-time worked. Nigeria came out flying.

Kanu rose to head home Ijamilusi's cross in the 58th minute, the substitute making an instant impact after replacing the injured Ajibade. Kanu thought she had a third moments later, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Payne completed her brace in the 63rd minute, finishing calmly after debutant Blessing Okpe had danced past two Comoros defenders to set her up. Three minutes later, Kanu got her second of the night, again heading in from another pinpoint Ijamilusi delivery.

The rout was completed from the penalty spot. Okpe, enjoying a dream debut off the bench, was fouled inside the box, and Ucheibe stepped up to convert and make it 5-0.

The Bigger Picture

Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was a virtual spectator throughout, as Nigeria combined attacking firepower with defensive solidity. Alongside Okpe, Fatimoh Solaty and Shakirat Moshood also made their Super Falcons debuts; a glimpse of the next generation.

Comoros, ranked 187th in the world, had arrived in Ikenne on the back of a remarkable 30-0 aggregate win over Sudan in the first round. But against a Super Falcons side chasing a fifth Olympic appearance, the gulf in class was clear across both legs. Nigeria had won the first leg 2-0 four days earlier through Michelle Alozie and Kanu.

What Next: Morocco Await

The reward for the 7-0 aggregate triumph is a heavyweight third-round tie against Morocco in March 2027, played over two legs. The winner of that tie will face the victor of the Tunisia/Senegal and Benin/Mauritania play-off in the fourth and final round in October 2027, with a ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games on the line.

On this evidence, few would bet against the Super Falcons. Five goals, a clean sheet, braces for Payne and Kanu, and debutants making their mark. The road to LA 2028 is well and truly alive.
