Wilfred Ndidi ruled out for the remainder of the season

Leicester City head coach, Brendan Rodgers had confirmed that Wilfred Ndidi will miss the remainder of the 2021/2022 football season.

The 25-year old Super Eagles midfielder had to undergo surgery after suffering a reported medial ligament tear in his knee.

Ndidi attempted to tackle Gaetan Laborde for the ball, but was injured in the process, during Leicester’s 2-1 defeat by Rennes in the Europa Conference League on March 17.

The duration of Ndidi’s injury was not known at the time, but Rodgers initial fears have now become a reality.

“Wilfred Ndidi will be out for the season, it’s a shame for us but he’ll get ready for next season. It’s unfortunate. He’s been a brilliant player for me in my time here. He picked up a nasty injury that has had to have surgery on and he’ll recover now until June.”, Rodgers said speaking ahead of Leicester’s visit to Manchester United this weekend.

Ndidi was called up for Nigeria’s critical 2022 Fifa World Cup Qualifying playoffs matches against Ghana, but was later replaced by FC Lorient’s Innocent Bonke. The Super Eagles did not qualify.

He appeared in every game for the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated in the Round of 16 by Tunisia.

Wilfred Ndidi’s season may be over – Brendan Rodgers

After his side’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Brentford on Sunday, Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers released injury report on the injury sustained by Wilfred Ndidi.

The Northern Irishman is concerned that the midfielder will miss the rest of the 2021-2022 season, due to a knee injury sustained in the second half of the Europa Conference League match against Rennes.

Ndidi was expected to return to play before the middle of April, with Rodgers previously claiming that he would be out for a few weeks, but it appears like a new timeline has been established.

The Nigerian international has missed six games due to injury this season and was unavailable for selection in three more games due to his commitments with the Super Eagles at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

In quotes relayed by LeicestershireLive, Rodgers said : “Wilf is not so good. We’re just waiting for a second opinion on that but whether he’ll play for the rest of the season I’m not sure. It’s a real shame for us”.

The Nath Boys academy product has been a notable performer for the Foxes in European competition this season, scoring twice and assisting once in eight outings in the Europa League and Conference League combined.

Ndidi was involved in a block tackle in the game against Rennes, according to the Scot.

Ndidi had won the ball cleanly, but he appeared to have harmed himself in the process.

“We just have to assess. He picked up an injury that might keep him out for a few weeks, which is a shame. And Marc Albrighton had to come off.

When the Super Eagles face Ghana in World Cup qualifiers on the 25th and 29th of March, Ndidi will be a huge absentee.

His apparent absence has left Nigerian football fans fuming, as he is regarded as one of the squad’s most trustworthy members and probably the greatest midfielder.

Iheanacho, Ndidi and Odey shine as Leicester City defeat Randers

Five Nigerians were involved from the start in yesterday’s second leg. Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Ademola Lookman started for the Premier League side, while Tosin Kehinde and Stephen Odey were on the pitch for Randers.

Leicester City advanced to the round of 16 of the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League. They did so with relative ease, defeating Randers 7-2 over two legs.

Within two minutes of the kickoff, Leicester City had taken the lead after Ndidi found Harvey Barnes, who curled a right-footed shot into the far corner – the club’s fastest goal in European competitions.

Leicester City led 6-1 on aggregate after a magnificent goal from James Maddison in the 70th minute. He scores again four minutes later, courtesy of an assist from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Odey had been denied on several occasions due to incredible stops by Danish goalkeeper, Kasper Schemeichel. He ultimately got his goal in the 83rd minute when he took advantage of an error by Schmeichel to tap the ball into the unguarded net.

Kehinde’s game on the other hand came to an abrupt end in the closing minutes. He was stretchered off the pitch after being fouled by Ndidi, who received a yellow card for the challenge.

Kehinde has since recovered fully from the knock and is available for Randers’ next league game, against Nordsjaelland on Sunday.
