Nigerian Footballers affected by UEFA’s ban on Russian Clubs

Nigerian players have performed admirably for their teams this season, but some will not be rewarded with victory.

Nigerian players have performed admirably for their teams this season, but some will not be rewarded with victory.

UEFA, the governing body of European football, has prolonged Russia’s exclusion from continental events until next season as part of sanctions imposed by the European Union to punish Russia for its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Early this year, the Russian army commanded by Putin invaded Ukraine, sparking a major conflict between the two countries. Russia has been the catalyst, destabilizing Kharkiv, Kyiv, and Mariupol.

In Ukraine, the war has resulted in the indefinite suspension of activities, including football. While league competition continues in Russia, no football has been played since December of last year.

UEFA took action against Russia earlier this season, disqualifying Moses’ Spartak Moscow from the Europa League round of 16 this season. FIFA also barred the national squad from competing in any of its qualifying.

However, ahead of next season, the European football regulatory body has imposed new penalties on Russian teams. Next season, no Russian club will be eligible to compete in any continental competition.

Chidera Ejuke of CSKA Moscow

The news is extremely concerning for Nigerian players in the league, particularly Victor Moses and Chidera Ejuke.

Spartak Moscow is now in the Russian Cup semifinals, and Victor Moses’ team would have qualified for the Europa League qualifications if they had won.

Ejuke, who has had a fantastic season with CSKA Moscow, would also be dissatisfied, since his team is now in fourth place and on the verge of qualifying for the Europa Conference League.

Unfortunately, due to the latest UEFA regulation, they will have to say goodbye to their ambitions to play on the continent next season.

They might, however, quit their clubs because both players’ contracts are up in two years and they could force their employers to sell them.

Premier League blocks Burnley from signing former Super Eagles forward

According to various reports in the English media, the English Premier League has barred former Chelsea winger, Victor Moses, from joining Burnley.

The Premier League has reportedly vetoed Burnley’s bid to save Moses from the agony of being stuck in limbo in Russia, according to Sky Sports.

Following the outbreak of conflict between the Russia and Ukraine, UEFA and FIFA confirmed that teams could register footballers from the Russian and Ukrainian leagues.

Foreign players with contracts in both countries were able to put their contracts on hold until June and play for another team.

Burnley wanted to add Moses to their roster to help them avoid relegation, but the Premier League refused to allow it because “it would compromise the competition’s sporting integrity.”

Following a successful loan term with Spartak Moscow in 2020-2021, the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner ended a nine-year affiliation with Chelsea last summer by signing a permanent agreement with the Russian Premier League team.

Moses, who won the Premier League with Chelsea in 2017, also played for Wigan Athletic, Liverpool, Stoke City, and West Ham United, scoring 20 goals in 220 appearances.

Victor Moses and Spartak Moscow expelled from the UEFA Europa League

Victor Moses’ employers, Spartak Moscow have been expelled from the Europa League this season by UEFA, as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In the last 16, the Russian team were drawn to face RB Leipzig, who have now received a bye to the quarter-finals.

A statement from the official twitter account of Spartak Moscow said:

Spartak won Group C, which contained Leicester and Napoli.

The move came as a growing number of European FAs have said that they will not play Russian teams. UEFA also ended its sponsorship agreement with Russian state-owned energy corporation Gazprom.

This move has ended Victor Moses’ aim of winning the UEFA Europa League for the second time.

Here’s the EaglesTracker Nigerian Team of the Week for Oct 15-18, 2021.

GOALKKEEPER – CHIAMAKA NNADOZIE

In goal, 20-year-old Chiamaka Nnadozie proved why she’s the number one shot-stopper for Paris FC in the French Division 1 Féminine.

Nnadozie has been particularly impressive this season, with performances reminiscent of her title winning NWPL campaign with Rivers Angels.

Her brilliance in goal over the weekend was capped with a clean sheet as Paris FC demolished placed Soyaux-Charente 4-0.

Nnadozie’s superb form has helped Paris FC to occupy third spot on the league table. They sit only three points behind joint leaders, Lyon and Paris Saint Germain.

LEFT BACK – JAMILU COLLINS

Jamilu Collins makes the cut as our left-back of the week. His German Bundesliga 2 team, SC Paderborn played out a 1-1 draw against Jahn Regensburg.

Collins played all 90 minutes of the match. He completed three tackles, and constantly made it difficult for the opposition attacker.

CENTRE BACK – GODSWILL EKPOLO

On the right side of centre back, Godswill Ekpolo deputises. He put in a fantastic display in BK Hacken’s 4-0 victory on Monday, making 4 clearances and 4 tackles.

CENTRE BACK – SEMI AJAYI

West Brom’s Semi Ajayi partners with Ekpolo to complete our pairing at the heart of defence.

Ajayi was part of a three-man Baggies defence that earned a ha-fought 1-0 victory over Birmingham in the EFL Championship. The win sees West Brom maintain second spot on the table, as they chase immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

RIGHT BACK – VICTOR MOSES

The industrious Victor Moses was in good form for Spartak Moscow this past weekend. He played all 90 minutes as his side came from behind to earn a late draw against Dynamo Moscow.

Seventh place Spartak have been struggling for form, but Moses has remained largely impressive so far this season.

CENTRE MIDFIELD – SAMSON TIJANI

19-year-old Samson Tijani makes our pick for the left side of centre midfield. His first Team of the Week appearance in 2021/2022.

Tijani did the dirty job in Liefering’s midfield, making 6 tackles and 3 interceptions as they beat LASK Juniors 2-0.

CENTRE MIDFIELD – AYOTOMIWA DELE-BASHIRU

Tom Dele-Bashiru takes our second midfield spot for his heroics in the English EFL Championship with Reading FC. Reading survived a narrow 1-0 win over Barnsley, which moved them to 7th on the league table. He made 2 key passes during the 90 mins.

LEFT FORWARD – CHIDERA EJUKE (STAR)

This could only have gone to Chidera Ejuke, a man already poised to become one of Nigeria’s biggest footballing exports.

The 23-year-old has been consistent throughout the season. Dazzling in the Russian Premier League with his quick feet and twinkle toes, Ejuke is simply a joy to watch.

He completed 9 out of 12 dribbles, and scored the lone goal in CSKA Moscow’s victory over FK Ural. He was also recently named as CSKA Moscow’s Player of the Month for August and September.

Although Salernitana lost to Spezia in the Italian Serie A, on-loan player Simy Nwankwo finally got off the mark. He scored his first Serie A goal for Salernitana in their 2-1 defeat. He also created two chances for his side who currently sit at the bottom of the league table.

Naturally, we’ll expect more goals to come from the Crotone loanee.

CENTRE FORWARD – VICTOR OSIMHEN

Victor… Osimhen!!! was the chant at the Diego Maradona stadium after the 22-year-old Nigeria international fired Napoli back to the top of the Italian Serie A table.

Victor Osimhen celebrates his goal for Napoli against Torino

Osimhen is growing into a crowd favourite in Naples, and once again proved why they spent so much money to sign him. He rose highest in the 81st minute to head Elif Elmas’ cross past Torino’s goalkeeper and hand Napoli the win with only nine minutes to go.

Osimhen has scored five goals in seven league appearances so far this season and does not look to be slowing down anytime soon.
