The Super Eagles preparation for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has been dealt another major blow. Paul Onuachu looks set to miss the tournament with a hamstring injury.

Onuachu put his side ahead with his 12th goal of the season before pulling up in the 71st minute while chasing a ball in KRC Genk’s 1-1 draw against Royal Antwerp FC.

"It's a muscle tear", the German sighed. I already had the impression that he was tired. When I asked how it went, he told me he could continue playing. I expect we will miss him for the next three to four weeks," said KRC Genk head coach, Bernd Storck.

With Victor Osimhen already likely to miss next month’s competition in Cameroon, the timing of this injury could not have been worse for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Other options for the Super Eagles in attack include Emmanuel Dennis, Taiwo Awoniyi and Cyriel Dessers.

Onuachu becomes the sixth Nigerian player to win the award, following in the footsteps of Daniel Amokachi (Club Brugge, 1992, 1994), Victor Ikpeba (RFC Liege, 1993), Godwin Okpara (Eendracht Aalst, 1995) and Celestine Babayaro (Anderlecht, 1996). His victory ends Nigeria’s 25-year wait for a winner.

Onuachu’s victory comes as no surprise as he was already named the Best Player in the Belgian Pro League. He had an incredible season, scoring 35 goals and providing 5 assists in 41 appearances. His goals propelled Genk to a Belgian Cup triumph.

Paul Onuachu and the Super Eagles: To be or not to be ?

KRC Genk forward, Paul Onuachu has been a subject of criticism in the Super Eagles yet again, as fans continue to insist that he doesn’t replicate his performances at club level for Nigeria.

Onuachu had a brilliant debut for the Super Eagles in a pre AFCON friendly against Egypt in 2019. In that game, he scored a wonderful goal assisted by John Ogu and performed really well on the night. His unmissable height, standing at 6 feet and 7 inches, also caused fans to compare him with a Nigerian great, Nwankwo ‘Papilo’ Kanu.

However it’s incredible how quickly ones fortunes can change in football. Following his debut game against Egypt, Onuachu hasn’t found it easy to please Nigerian fans.

No doubt, the stats are there to show that the 26 year old is a good striker. From his days at Midtjylland in Denmark, he has been a hit man, and he’s continued to show it at his current club, KRC Genk.

In the 2020/2021 Belgian Jupiler Pro League season so far, Onuachu has scored seven goals in seven games, which earned him a call up to the national team for the friendlies against Algeria and Tunisia.

The Super Eagles boss, Gernot Rohr recently said that Paul doesn’t play the Super Eagles way and the team wouldn’t change to suit him.

“The team must not have to adapt to a player’s game. The player must adapt to our style of play, and that is what Onuachu has to do. Our defenders and midfielders equally have the opportunities to give long balls to him and in the air, he is very strong; this is a new opportunity for us but he has to adapt his own game on ours.”

“We play on the ground, we don’t want to play all the time in the air, but our wingers can give good crosses and he can be interesting with his head”

In Friday’s 0-1 defeat to Algeria, Onuachu had another quiet game, failing to link up effectively with his midfield teammates. This again led to widespread criticism from Nigerian fans and raises more questions about his ‘fit’ in the Super Eagles setup.

Should Gernot Rohr be looking to adapt his style to accommodate Onuachu ? Is this an unfortunate Mismatch that cannot be resolved ? Leave a comment or reaction below.
