Randy Waldrum, the head coach of the Super Falcons, has unveiled a 25-player squad for the 12th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Randy Waldrum, the head coach of the Super Falcons, has unveiled a 25-player squad for the 12th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco from July 2–23, 2022.

Asisat Oshoala of FC Barcelona, Ashleigh Plumptre of Leicester City, Rasheedat Ajibade of Atletico Madrid, and other prominent players are among those traveling to Morocco.

Nigeria’s oldest international and five-time World Cup attendee, Onome Ebi, who turned 39 last month, will lead the Super Falcons as team captain.

Nigeria will kick off their campaign against South Africa’s Banyana Banyana on Monday, July 4th prior to their subsequent matches against Botswana (July 7th) and Burundi (10th), 

Africa will be represented at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand by all four of the semifinalist teams from the competition in Morocco.

On Monday, June 27, the group representing the Falcons will leave for Morocco.

The Falcons will be looking forward to retain the most coveted trophy in Africa’s women football.

 On Thursday, the nominees for the 2021-2022 Eagles Tracker Awards was revealed on our social media platforms. 

The EaglesTracker Awards is an exclusive annual event that honours Nigerian footballers’ outstanding achievements throughout the season under review.

The 2021-2022 edition will feature 14 categories in total, compared to the 13 awards handed out in 2020-2021. 

The Young Player of the Year award is making its debut this year and it’s a star studded one that has the likes of Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Calvin Bassey and Victor Osimhen. 

FC Union Berlin Forward, Tawio Awoniyi leads the way with four nominations apiece across various categories.

Anthony Nwakaeme’s eye-catching performances in Turkey for recently-crowned Trabzonspor have earned him a nomination for the ‘Forward of the Year’ award, while young guns like Christy Ucheibe, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Uchenna Kanu will compete with four-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala for the ‘MVP of the Year – Female’ award.

The award ceremony is a three days event and will be kicking off on the 15th of June, 2022 and will end on the 17th of June, 2022.

Super Falcons forward, Asisat Oshoala made her return to match action after two months out with injury, in Barcelona’s 5-1 thrashing of Wolfsburg. 

The UEFA Champions League defending champions took on the German giants in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinal.

Asisat Oshoala came on as a 73rd-minute substitute for Jennifer Hermoso.

Barcelona’s superior performance paid off as they overcame Wolfsburg for the first time in four encounters.

Wolfsburg had become a fish bone in the gullet for the Spanish giants, but the Blaugrana’s recent success allowed them to make mincemeat of their fellow European giants. 

Aitana Bonmati’s third-minute goal opened the floodgates in front of a raucous Camp Nou crowd.

Caroline Hansen increased the lead in the 10th minute, as the hosts jumped off to a quick lead.

Wolfsburg tried to pull one back, but were quickly beaten by Hermoso’s goal in the 33rd minute.

Alexia Putellas, the Ballon D’Or winner, scored the European champions’ fourth goal of the night, while Jil Roord gave the visitors something to take home.

Putellas finished the rout with 5 minutes remaining in normal time.

Despite her late introduction, Oshoala performed admirably and had three shots on target during the game.

Barcelona has taken a commanding lead into the second leg and is on set to capture their second European title.

The ceremony took place on Wednesday, after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

At the 2022 Nigeria Pitch Awards, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen was named King of the Pitch, while Barcelona player Asisat Oshoala was named Queen of the Pitch.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday night, after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

After scoring 19 goals in 16 league matches for Barcelona in the Primera Division, Oshoala beat out Gift Monday and Uchenna Kanu to the award of “Queen of the Pitch”.

The Lagos born forward also won her third consecutive league title in Spain’s top division since joining the Catalans in 2019.

Osimhen, on the other hand, has had a strong season in Serie A despite a number of injuries.

The 23-year-old has 11 goals in 20 league games so far this 2021/2022 season, and he was the Super Eagles’ leading scorer with four goals in their dismal World Cup qualification campaign.

Osimhen was also named Striker of the Year, while Wilfred Ndidi, William Troost-Ekong, and Maduka Okoye were named Midfielder, Defender, and Goalkeeper of the Year, respectively.

Super Falcons skipper, Asisat Oshoala has signed a two year contract extension with FC Barcelona Femini.

Her previous contract would’ve seen her become a free agent this summer but she’s now tied to the European champions until 2024.

The 27-year-old signed for Barça on January 31, 2019, and has since scored 80 goals in 101 competitive games. This feat makes her the sixth highest goalscorer in the Blaugrana’s history. 

Despite the injury battles this season, she’s currently the top scorer of the Primera Iberdrola, with 16 goals in 19 games.

The four time CAF African Women’s Footballer Of The Year had this to say:

“I am very happy to continue with the world’s best team. Not just for the football, but because off the pitch they are also best at looking after players and helping them to continue improving.”

“I am a forward and I want to carry on scoring goals. The aim is continue developing and to be happy”.

The 8th edition of the Nigeria Pitch Awards will take place on Sunday March 27th in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The 8th edition of the Nigeria Pitch Awards will take place on Sunday March 27th in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The organizing committee made the announcement on Saturday.

It is scheduled to take place following the second leg of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Black Stars of Ghana.

Mr Shina Philips, President of the Awards, said in a statement that in addition to the announcement of winners for all award tiers, First Lady, Dr Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, will be honoured with a Special Achievement in Sports Award for her influence on the development of women’s football in Africa.

Mrs Betsy Obaseki, Edo State First Lady; IGP Usman Alkali Baba, Inspector General of Police; and Mr Amaju Pinnick, President of the Nigeria Football Federation will also be honoured at the occasion.

The announcement of winners in 17 award categories will be among the other highlights of the 8th Award Ceremony. It should be mentioned that the nominees were revealed on January 5, 2022 in Lagos by the organizers.

NOMINEES

The King of the Pitch award will be a tight race between three outstanding footballers. Victor Osimhen of Napoli FC in Italy, Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester City FC in England, and Paul Onuachu of KRC Genk in Belgium are nominated for the award.

Asisat Oshoala of FC Barcelona Femenino is nominated for the Queen of the Pitch award alongside Gift Monday of FC Robo Queens and Uchenna Kanu of Tigres UANL in the Mexican Liga MX Femenil.

Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, and Nyesom Wike of Rivers State will vie for the award of “Football Friendly Governor of the Year.”

Leicester City FC’s Kelechi Iheanacho is nominated for the Striker of the Year Award alongside Napoli’s Osimhen and Genk’s Onuachu.

NFF sponsors, leading airline Air Peace, communications giant MTN, and oil and gas solutions provider AITEO Group are all nominated for the Corporate Sponsor of Football Award.

Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Midfielder of the Year, Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sam Okwaraji Award, Best Grassroots Football Development Program, Football Pitch of the Year Award, and Football Journalist of the Year are among the other awards to be handed out on the night.

The Spanish giants have overwhelmed every opponent this season. They defeated Francisca Ordega’s Levante 4-2 on Sunday in the Copa de la Reina final. Oshoala featured as a second half substitute while Ordega was unused in the encounter.

Superzee, as she is fondly referred to by her supporters, was impressive as usual this season. She scored 13 goals and provided 2 assists in 20 appearances for Barcelona this season, despite missing time out with a nagging foot injury.
