Boniface and Tella become the first Nigeria internationals since Oliseh to win the Bundesliga

  • Bayer 04 Leverkusen have won the Bundesliga title for the first time in the club's history.
  • Die Werkself claimed a maiden league honour in their 119-year history after romping to a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.

Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella were involved in the win over Werder Bremen.

The two attackers become the third and fourth Nigeria internationals to win the Bundesliga titles ever. Pascal Ojigwe won the German league with Kaiserslautern in 1998, and Sunday Oliseh claimed it with Borussia Dortmund in 2002.

After an incredible 41-game unbeaten record across all competitions this term, Bayer Leverkusen knew a win over Werder Bremen at the BayerArena would be enough to clinch a historic title on Sunday.

Fittingly, Boniface, the club's top scorer this term, opened the scoring for Die Werkself to get the party started in Leverkusen.

The Super Eagles striker scored from the penalty spot in the 20th minute after Jonas Hofmann was fouled in the box. Boniface's spot kick was expertly taken as he sent Werder goalkeeper Michael Zetterer the wrong way.

The former Union Saint-Gilloise forward assisted Leverkusen's second goal as he laid the ball off for Granit Xhaka to strike into the net from outside the box.

Boniface and Tella were replaced shortly after the hour mark before playmaker Florian Wirtz boosted the scoreline with a 22-minute hat-trick.

Boniface contributed 11 goals and eight assists in only 18 matches to Leverkusen's title triumph. The 23-year-old striker also has five goals and assists in six Europa League games to help the Germans put one foot in the competition's semifinals.

Leverkusen are also through to the finals of the DFB Pokal, with Boniface netting two goals in his only two appearances in that tournament.

Nathan Tella can also be pleased with his contribution to Leverkusen's historic title win.

The former Southampton man scored five goals and added two assists in 20 games for Leverkusen, only five of which were in the starting lineup.
