The Captain of the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria spoke to the press following their disappointing Round of 16 exit from the 2019 FIFA U17 World Cup, at the hands of a Netherlands’ side that finished third in their group, losing their opening two fixtures.

He offered his apologies to Nigerians and Nigerian fans, stating that although they admot that the result is a disappointing one for the squad, they are positive, as they were knocked out by a good opponent and that they had “tried their best”.

Tijani said:

“On behalf of the team, I will just say we are sorry. For today’s game we got hard luck but we really thank God for everything, injury-free and our opponents are a very good side.

We played till the end but we lost the game, at least we tried our best.”

A poor defensive display by the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, allowed Ajax forward, Sontje Hansen to net a hat-trick & propel the Netherlands past Nigeria 3-1 and into the quarter-finals at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Brazil 2019.

The Golden Eaglets again went behind to an early goal, with Netherlands taking the lead after only 4 minutes of play. Olakunle Olusegun able to draw level on after 12 mins. He turned Dutch defender Devyne Rensch with a slick cutback, then fired a low, burning shot from the corner of the penalty area that seared past goalkeeper Calvin Raatsie. ,

But the parity was short lived as Hansen scored 2 minutes later to restore the one-goal advantage for the Dutch.

Hansen completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot in the 80th minute, after Ferdinand had conceded a penalty for handball.

It was an uninspiring performance by the Golden Eaglets, who will now have to wait at least another two years before getting another shot at their sixth U-17 crown.

The Golden Eaglets were on the front foot for most of the game, but failed to capitalize on their numerous chances created.

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria made a dramatic comeback, scoring 3 goals in just over 6 minutes in the second half to record a 4-2 victory, and avoid a shock defeat vs Hungary in their opening fixture of the 2019 FIFA U-17 World cup Brazil.

Up next for the Eaglets is Ecuador. Both Teams should be in good spirits ahead of today’s match as they were both victorious on opening day.

Ecuador were 2-1 win over Australia. Both teams have 3 points but Nigeria sits top of Group B due to a superior goal difference. A win for either side will automatically qualify them for the Round of 16, which makes the encounter a crunchy one. The Ecuadorians will pose a tougher test to the Eaglets compared to their previous opposition. They have shown they have just as much pace, power and trickery as the Eaglets.

I expect a very fast game, as both teams have shown they can keep running for 90 minutes without fading out.

PLAYER TO WATCH:

Johan Mina (Forward, Ecuador)

The tricky attacker led La Tri’s South American qualifying bid with six goals. Though he didn’t find the mark in his Brazil 2019 debut, Mina has the tools to thrive against a Nigeria side who like to get out and run themselves.

Kick off is at 9pm (WAT) live from the Stadio Olimpico in Goiana, Brazil.

The Marnu Garba led side will be hoping to make it the 6th time Nigeria will be winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup after successes in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and in 2015, make them the most successful U-17 side in World Cup history. the highest of any nation.

Ecuador, meanwhile, have only made it to the Quarter Finals twice, in 1985 & 2015, They have never won the competition.

GOLDEN EAGLETS ANNOUNCE THEIR ARRIVAL IN BRAZIL WITH 4-2 WIN

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria came from behind twice, to secure a 4-2 victory over Hungary on the opening day of the 2019 FIFA U17 World Cup.

FIRST HALF

The Hungarian side seemingly came flying out of their locker room, as they made an explosive start to the game. They took the lead inside the opening 3 minutes thanks to Komaromi, and the Golden Eaglets were off to their worst possible start. They immediately took control of the game from the Hungarians, and looked to create chances through their captain an midfield-general, Samson Tijani.

The Nigerians had the lion-share of possession for the opening  period of play, and their relentless pressure eventually paid off on the 20 min mark. Wisdom Ubani was felled by a Hungarian defender inside the penalty box, and Captain, Samson Tijani calmly stepped up to dispatch the spot-kick (well-struck and into the bottom-left corner).

Nigeria continued on the front foot after getting the equalizer, and looked more likely to get the next goal, but sloppy defending allowed Samuel Major to find some space on the edge off the Nigerian box, and fire a beautiful shot into the goal on 28 mins.

The Golden Eaglets went into the break behind by a single goal.

SECOND HALF

It was more of the same from both sides in the second half, the Golden Eaglets continued to control possession of the ball, while Hungary continued to defend in numbers. The Golden Eaglets found it extremely difficult to break the resolute back-line of the Hungaraians as they barely fashioned any real opportunities.

Manu Garba introduced Akinwunmi Amoo, who brought a much needed spark of life into the side. The Golden Eaglets looked a more energized side with him on the field and started creating some chances

The equalizer came after 79 mins, as Usman Ibrahim scored with a header from a corner. The third goal came almost immdiately after as the Golden Eaglets again hit Hungary on the break, and it was Oluwatimilehin Adeniyi on the end of the cross from the left wing.

Captain, Samson Tijani rounded off the scoring on 85 mins with a free kick that deflected off the wall and beyond the goalkeeper, into the net.

The Golden Eaglets turn a potentially embarrassing defeat into a memorable victory in a matter of minutes..
