Super Eagles forward, Moses Simon has been named the Nantes Player of the Month for April.

Simon received 59.51 percent of the total votes, edging out three of his teammates for the award.

The winger was competing for the prize against Quentin Merlin, Wylan Cyprien, and Kalifa Coulibaly. Merlin, one of Nantes’ most important players, received the honor in February and March.

In five league games for Nantes this month, Simon scored three goals and added one assist. After scoring twice in the Canaries’ 2-2 draw with Lens on Sunday, the Nigerian international was named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Week.

Simon had won the prize in September and had been nominated for it again in March. This season, the dynamic winger has six goals and eight assists in 32 games for Nantes in all competitions.

Simon joined Nantes on loan from Levante in LaLiga in 2019, and the French club exercised their option to buy him in 2020, with the Nigerian signing a four-year contract.

During the 2019/20 season, the Nigerian won the club’s Player of the Season award.

He formerly played for AS Trencin in Slovakia and KAA Gent in Belgium’s Pro League.

Simon has six goals in 45 appearances for the three-time African champions on the international stage.

Simon has been instrumental to the club’s form this season and despite missing on one of the European qualification slots, they are in a comfortable position in the league compared to the 2020/21 season, where they remained in the league by virtue of the relegation play-offs.

They’ll be playing against OGC Nice in the French Cup final today by 9pm.

Following the incidents of the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier against Ghana in Abuja, FIFA slapped the Nigeria Football Federation with a $150,000.00 fine and a one-match suspension behind closed doors.

The latest FIFA Disciplinary Report, dated April 28th, 2022, and made available to the press on Monday, May 2nd, 2022, includes these punishments.

During the match on March 29, 2022, Nigeria was found to have failed to “ensure law and order is maintained in the stadium, invasion of the field of play, and throwing of items.”

In Algeria’s match against Cameroon, they were fined roughly $3000 for “throwing objects and lighting fireworks.”

Following Senegal’s sanction of nearly $170,000.00 for their match against Egypt on the same date, Nigeria received the second highest fine.

“Laser pointing and usage of things to broadcast a message that is not appropriate for a sporting event” are among Senegal’s transgressions. As part of the punishment, Senegal, like Nigeria, will have to play one match behind closed doors.

Nigeria’s first home game since that loss will be the encounter against Sierra Leone on June 9th, 2022.

Super Eagles legend, Tijani Babangida has advised the Super Eagles to be more focused if they are to defeat the trio of Sao Tome, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Super Eagles fell short of glory at the last edition of the AFCON, as they failed to get past the Round of 16 following a 1-0 loss to Tunisia.

Only about a month after the AFCON ouster, the three-time African champions also failed to make it to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Despite the plethora of talents in the Eagles squad, they failed to defeat a depleted Ghanaian side during World Cup Qualifying Playoffs in March.

They’ll however be hoping to redeem their image by not bottling their chances of qualifying for AFCON 2023.

In an interview with Completesports, the former Ajax player remarked that if the club wants to overcome its opponents, they must show that desire and commitment.

AFCON 2023 Qualifying – Group A

He stated that the Super Eagles would face difficult opponents and that they must be prepared to face them.

“I must confess to you that Africa football has grown beyond those days when you can regard a team minnows. The Super Eagles must do the needful if they are to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

“No team will be afraid to face the Super Eagles regardless of the array of stars we parade in our disposal. But then, the team can restore that fear factor again if they impose their authority in games and finish up games as quickly as possible.

“The truth is that Sao Tome, Sierra Leone, Guinea-Bissau will not be an easy ride for the Super Eagles.”
