After scoring a brace in Feyenoord Rotterdam’s 3-2 home win against Marseille in the first leg of their Europa Conference League semi-final showdown on Thursday night, Cyriel Dessers can’t contain his joy.

On 18 minutes, Dessers put the home team ahead with a low shot past Steve Mandanda.

Following that, the Nigerian international took advantage of a poor back pass from Caleta-Car to score the game-winning goal just seconds after the interval.

“Maybe I’m not such a bad striker after all, hey”, Dessers told Sporza after the game.

“Ah, it’s a nice side effect, that’s all.”

“It went in all directions, but it was fantastic to play this match. As a child you dream of being able to play in full stadiums. The feeling of scoring in such matches is almost indescribable. And I do twice tonight, in an important semi-final against Olympique Marseille .”

Cyriel Kolawole Dessers celebrating with his team mates

“We have stayed true to our style and we have not collapsed, we have been doing it like that all season. We know that there is a high risk factor behind that, but it also pays off.

“We have been able to force Marseille to make mistakes. were not great, but you feel that that flash can come to them at any time,” concludes Dessers.

It’s worthy to note that the Nigerian was left out of the AFCON 2021 squad despite his red hot form during that period.

The 27-year-old, who is on loan from Belgian Pro League club Club Brugge, is now the competition’s leading scorer with ten goals.

Dessers will compete for the individual trophy against teammate Luis Sinisterra, Leicester City’s Ademola Lookman, and AS Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini.

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst defends Leon Balogun amidst suspension

Rangers manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst has backed Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun, who was sent off in the 28th minute of Rangers’ 3-1 win against Motherwell.

Giovanni Van Bronckhorst defends Leon Balogun amidst suspension

Balogun was sent off for the first time this season, but the Gers battled back to win the game.

Rangers manager Giovanni Van Bronckhorst has backed Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun, who was sent off in the 28th minute of Rangers’ 3-1 win against Motherwell.

Balogun received his first red card of the season following a clumsy tackle on Dean Cornelius by referee Nick Walsh 28 minutes into their match against Motherwell.

Despite this, the Gers dug deep and scored two goals in the second half to win 3-1 at Fir Park.

Van Bronckhorst, Rangers’ manager, disagreed with Walsh’s ruling, believing Balogun’s tackle was not intentional and that he was trying for the ball.

“Leon wanted to win the tackle,” Van Bronckhorst told Rangers website.

“in these circumstances, the margins are very little, so the ref decided to give the red card, and we had to respect that, move on and make sure we had the focus on the minutes that we had to play after that sending off.”

Balogun has been a key player for Rangers this season, appearing in 33 games across all competitions.

Rangers face RB Leipzig in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal clash on Thursday, and the Super Eagles star is still eligible for selection.

Aribo inspires Rangers to victory over Sporting Braga

After brushing aside Portuguese opposition on Thursday, the Gers are two games away from the final of the continent’s second-tier club competition.

Rangers battled to a thrilling 3-2 aggregate triumph over Sporting Braga to clinch a spot in the Europa League semifinals. Joe Aribo delivered two key assists, while Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun also contributed.

Last week, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side were defeated 1-0 in Portugal, but they came back to win 3-1 at home after extra time to reach their first European semifinal in 14 years.

Rangers got off to a great start at Ibrox, thanks to Joe Aribo. The Super Eagles midfielder displayed excellent vision to send a pinpoint pass to James Tavernier, who displayed superb calm inside the box to bury the ball in the bottom right corner.

Kemar Roofe headed in a second goal for the home side just as the Light Blues fans were finishing their celebrations, but it was ruled out for a handball after a VAR review.

Tavernier added a second for the hosts from the penalty spot soon before halftime, with Tormena’s dismissal reducing the visitors to 10 men.

Soon after the restart, Aribo should have added a third goal, but his rocket of a shot sailed just wide of the left post after he had raced through the middle to the edge of the box.

Rangers had many chances to end the tie, including a goal by Roofe that was deemed offside, but they were unable to capitalize. And they would come to regret all of their missed opportunities, as a David Carmo header in the 88th minute halved Braga’s deficit on the night and brought them level on aggregate.

Calvin Bassey was a rock for the Gers up until that time. Nonetheless, Giovanni van Bronckhorst did not waste any time in replacing Borna Borisic with Leon Balogun to shore up the defense.

However, no further goals were scored before the referee indicated the end of normal time.

Rangers went ahead 3-1 in extra time thanks to Aribo’s skill, as the former Charlton Athletic man laid the ball on a dish for Kemar Roof to score with a simple close-range finish midway through the first half.

And the night went even better for the Gers when Braga was reduced to nine men as Iuri Medeiros was given a second yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.

However, Braga were unable to produce any late drama as Rangers advanced to the Europa League semifinals.

Ajibade and Onumonu on target as Super Falcons hold Canada to a draw

The Super Falcons came back from a 2-0 loss three days earlier to play a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Canadian Women’s National Team.

Ajibade and Onumonu on target as Super Falcons hold Canada to a draw in Langford, BC

The Nigerian women’s national team was on the verge of earning a remarkable victory over its illustrious opponents on Monday night.

Nigeria came back from a 2-0 loss three days earlier to play a dramatic 2-2 draw with the Canadian women’s national team at the Starlight Stadium in Langford, BC

Ifeoma Onumonu and Rasheedat Ajibade were on target for the African champions, who were able to salvage some pride in their draw over the reigning Olympic winners.

After a lackluster performance in the first leg of their two-legged friendly match against Canada, the Super Falcons were eager to improve their performance against the world’s sixth-ranked team.

After five minutes, they rightfully took the lead when Ifeoma Onumonu’s exquisite back-heel kick went past Kailen Sheridan in the Canadian goal.

Nigeria went into the break with a lead thanks to Chiamaka Nnadozie’s outstanding goalkeeping and some solid defensive play.

Following an error from Onome Ebi, Canada was able to pin the Africans back quickly after the restart through Christine Sinclair.

In the 53rd minute, though, Rasheedat Ajibade’s cross bounced beyond substitute Canadian goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo, who stood powerless as the ball soared behind her.

The Super Falcons hung on for the majority of the second half, but a late equalizer by Shelina Zardowsky denied them a memorable second-ever victory over the CONCACAF giants.

With their tour of Canada completed, the Randy Waldrum-coached ladies will focus on defending their title at the African Women’s Nations Cup in Morocco.
