NIGERIA V SUDAN MATCH PREVIEW | AFCON 2021

Nigeria have claimed 8 wins and 4 draws from the last 14 games between both teams across all competitions.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign in stellar fashion. Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Egypt marked the North African side’s first defeat at the AFCON group phase since 2004 when the Pharaohs lost 2-1 to Algeria.

The Super Eagles hope to continue their impressive run of form when they take on Sudan at 5pm WAT today.

Nigeria currently sit top of Group D following the win over Egypt, and a goalless draw between Sudan and Guinea-Bissau. A victory for the Super Eagles will guarantee their place in the tournament’s Round of 16.

Head-to-Head

Nigeria are still chasing a fourth AFCON title and will fancy their chances when both teams take to the pitch.

The Super Eagles are on an impressive run of form. They have five wins and one draw from their last seven games, falling to one defeat against Central African Republic in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Augustine Eguavoen’s side also enjoy a good head-to-head record against Sudan. Nigeria have claimed 8 wins and 4 draws from the 14 meetings between both teams across all competitions.

Nigeria vs Sudan Head to Head

The last meeting between both sides was a 1-0 win for Gernot Rohr’s home-based Eagles at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Semi-final, at the Stade de Marrakech, Marrakech, Morocco in 2018.

Players to Watch

Seniorman Kelechi Iheanacho was in inspirational form, providing a sensational two-touch goal from a Joe Aribo assist.

Eguavoen will be looking towards both players to inspire the attack once again. He will also be calling on Union Berlin forward, Taiwo Awoniyi to break the Sudanese backline.

Nigeria’s captain, Ahmed Musa could also be given an outside chance to lead the lineup as we expect Sudan to sit deep and soak up pressure.

Sudan’s head coach, Burhan Tia will be looking towards players like Al-Gozoli Nooh and Yasin Hamed to offer some inspiration in attack. However, we expect him to rely more on his defence, especially goalkeeper Ali Abu Eshrein.

The 33-year old’s heroic penalty save in the 82nd minute was enough to earn them a point against Guinea-Bissau on Matchday One of the AFCON. We expect him to have a relatively busy day against the dynamic attack of the Super Eagles.

AFCON 2021: Nigeria v Egypt Match Preview

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will open their AFCON 2021 campaign with a true test of preparedness against a formidable Egyptian side on Jan 11.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will kick off their AFCON 2021 campaign with a true test of preparedness against a formidable Egyptian side. It is the first game of Group D, and will kick off at 5pm WAT on Tuesday January 11 live from the Estadio Roumde Adjia in Garoua, Cameroon.

Both teams enjoyed a fairly comfortable Africa Cup of Nations qualification, and will hope to make a statement win on Matchday One of the tournament.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles are three-time AFCON Champions while their Egyptian opponent have lifted the trophy an impressive seven times. The North African side’s impressive tally makes them the most successful team in the tournament’s history.

Head-to-Head

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Pharaohs of Egypt have faced off five times in competitive games. The Egyptians won three games, Nigeria won one and they once played out a draw.

Nigeria’s only win against Egypt came in their most recent matchup. The Super Eagles won by a single Paul Onuachu goal to nil in a March 2019 international friendly.

If history is anything to go by, it clearly favours the Egyptians, however Nigeria are on a slightly better run of form.

Players to Watch

A highly competitive fixture is on the cards for both teams who boast of stars playing across the globe.

Nigeria lose out on in-form Watford FC striker Emmanuel Dennis, and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, but have senior players like Leicester City duo Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho available.

There’s also an array of pacy wingers in Chidera Ejuke and Samuel Chukwueze who will fancy their chances against the Egyptian backline.

The Pharaohs themselves have players who would cause problems for the Super Eagles defence. Star player, Mohammed Salah is currently in the form of his life.

Salah will be joined by Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny and Aston Villa’s Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet. They will all be expected to lead the charge as Egypt battle to claim a record eight African title.

The game looks delicately poised with two African footballing powerhouses deadlocked and looking to claim a win and the bragging rights.

Victory for either side will send a statement of intent to every other team at the Africa Cup of Nations. The match is also fairly important for knockout round draws, as the second placed team in the group faces the winner of Group E (which has Algeria, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Equitorial Guinea) in the Round of 16.

AFCON 2021 Fixtures: Nigeria (Group D)

Both sides are considered amongst the pre-tournament favourites and will be hoping to start in the best possible manner..

One thing we are sure of though, is that it will be a highly contested battle, and an entertaining fixture.

Super Eagles forwards, Emmanuel Dennis & Victor Osimhen have both been dropped from the AFCON squad only days to the start of the tournament.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have announced an updated list with Watford’s Emmanuel Dennis dropped. The Hornets reportedly denied Dennis from representing Nigeria in the AFCON tournament.

Super Eagles AFCON 2021 Squad

A statement from the NFF alleges the Premier League side were “baring fangs” in the matter of Dennis’s release. Watford head coach, Claudio Ranieri has since denied these claims.

Elsewhere and in Italy, Napoli’s Osimhen has also been ruled out from participating in the tournament, with his club side reporting that the striker has returned a positive Covid-19 test.

His latest coronavirus result, in addition to Napoli’s reluctance to let him play at the AFCON tournament led to the player sending an official letter to the NFF about his decision to withdraw from the squad.

Olympiakos winger Henry Onyekuru and Sparta Prague’s Peter Olayinka have both been given a late call up to replace Dennis and Osimhen, while one half of the Oyinbo defence Leon Balogun, and Shehu Abdullahi have also been replaced by West Brom’s Semi Ajayi and Tyronne Ebuehi who plays for Venezia at the Italian Serie A.

Jose Peseiro: NFF appoints Portuguese tactician as new Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have announced the appointment of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles head coach.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have announced the appointment of Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as the new Super Eagles head coach.

In a press statement on Wednesday evening, the NFF noted that Peseiro will be at the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) as an observer, while Augustine Eguavoen, will be in the dug-out as the Super Eagles manager, but revert to his technical director status when the tournament ends.

The statement reads in part:

“After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr.”

“However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer.

“It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON.”

The 61-years-old Portuguese boasts of a long-lasting coaching career that spans but club and country football. He was an assistant coach at Real Madrid in the 2003/2004 season, he led Sporting Lisbon to the final of the Europa League in 2005, he won the Portuguese cup with Sporting Braga in 2013 before coming to Africa to coach Al Ahly in 2015. There, he won the league title despite spending only one season (2015/2016).

At the national team level, he notably coached Saudi Arabia and most recently Venezuela whom he led to the 2021 Copa America group stage.

In August 2021, he resigned from his post as head coach after having not been paid for over a year amidst Venezuela’s economic crisis.

Peseiro replaces Gernot Rohr, the Franco-German, who was sacked on December 12.

Nigerian Team of the Week (Nov 26-29, 2021)

As the month of November draws to an end, here’s the EaglesTracker Nigerian Team of the Week for this past weekend of action.

As the month of November draws to an end, here’s the EaglesTracker Nigerian Team of the Week for this past weekend of action.

Goalkeeper – Daniel Akpeyi (Kaizer Chiefs)

Daniel Akpeyi marked his 50th clean sheet in all for South African club side Kaizer Chiefs in their 1-0 league win over Maritzburg United. He followed up with yet another impressive outing away from home in a 3-1 win over Swallows to keep the pressure on Mamelodi Sundowns as they sit second on the table, eight points behind the league leaders.

Left Centre Back – Calvin Bassey (Rangers)

Calvin Bassey has enjoyed life in the Scottish Premier League after moving from Leicester in the summer of 2020. The athletic defender was particularly impressive as his side beat Livingston 3-1 to maintain their lead as table toppers with 33 points, that’s 4 points better than second place Celtic.

Centre Back – Igoh Ogbu (Lillestrom)

At the heart of the defence, Igoh Ogbu was a rock as his Norwegian side Lillestrøm beat Stomsgodset 4-1 to maintain their fourth-place spot in the league table.

Ogbu was unfortunate to be subbed out of the game, but while he was on, the 21-years-old had an easy time keeping the opposition attack at bay.

Right Centre Back – Kelechi Christian (Casa Pia AC)

Kelechi Christian equally had a good shift in the Liga Portugal 2 as his side Casa Pia picked up all three points away from home to Farense.

Christian ensured the opposition attack had nothing to feed on, as his side cruised to victory, picking up a clean sheet as well as an important win.

Left Midfield – Joe Aribo (Rangers)

Another player from Rangers making our team is Joe Aribo. The talented midfielder stole the show in Gio van Bronckhorst’s first win as a manager, while also getting a goal to his name.

Aribo has grown in leaps and bounds, as top clubs in Europe continue to monitor his progress. He has also been touted by many as arguably Rangers’ best player so far this season.

Centre Midfield – Tom Dele-Bashiru (Reading)

Tom Dele Bashiru scored his fourth goal for Reading as they played a five-goal thriller against Swansea.

The talented midfielder provided the first equaliser as his side went on to win 3-2 against a difficult opposition. Bashiru nearly got a second as his shot hit the post but fell kindly for teammate Danny Drinkwater who cooly converted.

Centre Midfield – Ifeanyi Mathew (Lillestrom)

Ifeanyi Matthew is the second player from Norwegian Eliteserien club Lillestrøm to make our Team of the Week. The versatile midfielder played 71 minutes of his side’s 4-1 win over Stomsgodset as they stay within earshot of the league leaders.

Right Midfield – Akinkunmi Amoo (Hammarby)

Akinkunmi Amoo has been a revelation for Swedish side Hammarby all season long. The 19-year-old winger has had 18 direct goal contributions in 2021 alone for his club side but failed to inspire his side to a win last time out as Hammarby were held to a goalless draw against 13th placed Halmstad.

His club side remains fifth on the log, 8 points behind Malmo and could yet challenge for a Europa Conference League qualifiers finish.

Left Forward – Emmanuel Dennis (Watford)

Emmanuel Dennis continued his impressive start to life in the Premier League playing for Watford. The pacy winger proved too difficult for Leicester as he got on the scoresheet in a 4-2 loss to Leicester, but still asked a lot of the Foxes defence.

Its unfortunate that he was subbed off injured, as he’s been the Hornet’s main attack force.

Right Forward – Samuel Chukwueze

While Villareal lost to Barcelona at the Spanish La Liga, Samuel Chukwueze finally got off the mark with a goal from his first shot on target in the league this season.

Naturally he was difficult to contain by the Catalans, further showing that Barcelona are his favourite opponents, and despite the 3-1 loss, Chukwueze looked closer to his previous explosive form of last season.

Centre Forward – Emeka Eze (Ankara Kenciorengucu)

Ankara Keciorengucu’s Emeka Eze leads our attacking trident thanks to his hattrick contribution as his side beat league leaders Umraniyespor in a five-goal thriller.

Despite the hard-fought battle, a harder fight will be needed for his side this season as they sit two spots from bottom.

However, if they can get their star striker to deliver more goals in clutch moments, they could just turn the season around.

Nigerian Player of the Month – October 2021

6 games, 6 Goals. Stephen Odey’s excellent performances for Randers wins him our Nigerian Player of the Month honours for October 2021.

In a month filled with top top performances from Nigerian footballers abroad, Stephen Odey stole the show to become EaglesTracker’s Nigerian Player of The Month.

Stephen Odey wins Player of the Month Award for October 2021

Odey is known for his speed, agility and quick reactions, notably some of his greatest attributes, and these are being felt by his current team side FC Randers and indeed the Danish Super Liga.

The former FC Zurich star has been an instant hit to his loan side. Odey has scored 11 goals in 13 appearances for his team across all competitions so far this season. He also bagged four league goals in October alone, including a beautiful match winner against Odense.

It comes as no surprise that the 23-year-old was voted the best player in the Danish Super Liga for the month of October.

The Forward bags our Nigerian Player of the Month award for his heroics, especially in the UEFA Conference League where he scored a brace in 2-2 draw against Jablonec FK.

Odey’s recent run of goal scoring form has also seen him receive a massive influx of support. Paul Onuachu and Asisat Oshoala both sent their congratulations.
