Die Eisernen continue to enjoy outstanding performances from the Super Eagles striker. He scored the game-winning goal for Union Berlin in a 1-0 victory over Cologne.

Awoniyi was left out of Nigeria’s roster for the match against Ghana but didn’t let it weight him down as he led his club side to victory.

Union Berlin welcomed Cologne to the Stadion An der Alten Försterei yesterday. Having lost only one of their previous five games, Cologne were in seventh place, two points ahead of eight placed Union Berlin on the Bundesliga table.

In the first half, Cologne was limited to just five attempts on goal, all of which were unsuccessful, as the first half concluded in a goalless draw.

Urs Fischer’s men boasts one of the best defenses in Germany’s top level.

The breakthrough for Union Berlin came in the second half, when Awoniyi was rewarded for his tenacity. He capitalized on a sloppy ball from Cologne defender, Jonas Hector, to score from close range.

Union held on for the 1-0 victory in the last minutes of the game. With the win, they move up to seventh place, three points shy of a Europa Conference League spot.

The Nigerian is also tied with Sebastian Andersson’s club record of 12 goals in a season set in 2019/20.

English Premier League clubs, Newcastle United, West Ham United, Southampton and returnees Fulham are reportedly interested in signing the 24-year old.
