THE JOURNEY TO STARDOM for most Nigerian footballers isn’t an easy one. It comes with a lot of difficulties and challenges encountered.
In this series, we will highlight a number of stars who have been able to work their way up from playing in Nigeria, to the highest level of professional football.
Oghenekaro Peter Etebo
DOB: November 9, 1995
Oghenekaro Peter Etebo: Oghenekaro Etebo joined Warri Wolves in 2012 from Lord Honour Academy, but had to wait until 2013 to make his debut for the club. He announced himself to fans of the Nigerian Professional Football League with a fantastic hat trick against El-Kanemi Warriors during the 2013/2014 season.
He scored the fastest hat trick of the 2014 season in Warri Wolves’ 3-1 victory over Wikki Tourist, scoring all 3 goals within 22 minutes of match action. In 2015, his superb strike against Bayelsa united was voted the best goal of the NPFL season.
Etebo turned heads in the NPFL for two seasons with Warri Wolves, catching the eyes of football fans in the country with thunderous strikes, and a growing reputation for scoring triples.
He made his international debut in 2013, as a part of the home-based Super Eagles for the 2014 African Championships (CHAN) qualification campaign. He was a member of the Nigeria U23 National team that won the CAF U23 Africa Cup of Nations in 2015, before securing a bronze medal with the Olympic Eagles of Nigeria at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Etebo made his move to Europe in early 2016, joining Portuguese second-division club, CD Feirense. He played four times in his debut season for the club, scoring one goal and helping them gain promotion to the Primera Liga. He spent six months on loan with Spanish La Liga club, Las Palmas in 2018 and earned rave reviews for his performances with the side who were eventually relegated.
In the summer of 2018, after his impressive showing at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, he signed for English Championship side, Stoke City on a five-year deal, reportedly turning down offers from Premier League clubs.
He currently plays his football for CD Getafe in the Spanish La Liga, on loan from Stoke City and is a member of the Super Eagles.
