Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama spoke with Eagles Tracker live on Instagram about a range of topics including his time with the Super Eagles, his dream club and more.
Having represented the Super Eagles of Nigeria 101 times, the former LOSC Lille goalkeeper is the undisputed all-time appearance maker for the Nigerian national team.
Speaking about how he was able to maintain his position in the national team for so long, Enyeama said: “My stability na God, it’s not easy to be the most capped player of Nigeria. Play 101 times, fly all the funny flights, it’s not easy. You know Nigeria, it’s not easy to represent the country.”
Enyeama was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
When asked about what it was like for him playing with several generations of Nigerian footballers, including some of the biggest legends the country has seen, he made mention of Jay Jay Okocha and Nwankwo Kanu in particular. Enyeama says he was almost overwhelmed by their presence.
About Kanu, he said: “Till he left the Super Eagles, I couldn’t call him [Kanu] by name, I just used to say ‘senior man’. The respect was too much.”
Speaking about the current Super Eagles squad, he joked that he sometimes gets jealous when he sees the lineup before a game. “All of them. I believe every player in this current generation has what it takes to achieve absolutely everything. You look at the likes of Iwobi. Sometimes I even look at the lineup and get jealous.”
The 37-year old also spoke about some of the goalkeepers he admires in the game. Asked to name his all-time favourite goalkeeper other than himself, he said: “Casillas. Van Der Sar as well, I really looked up to him in terms of playing with my feet. But Casillas…I could fight you if you insult Casillas.”
Before the end of the conversation, Enyeama’s love for Kanu Nwankwo shone once again as he named Arsenal as the one club he would love to play for if he could do back to his prime playing days. When asked his the reason for selecting Arsenal as his dream club, he simply replied, “I’ve always loved Arsenal. I dont know, maybe it’s because Papilo [Kanu] was there.”
Enyeama revealed that he is still working out, staying in shape and ever ready to perform, should a club come calling.
