The Belgian Pro League is set to become the first major European league to cancel the 2019/2020 season due to the novel coronavirus global outbreak.
Club Brugge are set to handed the titles, which means that Nigerian duo, Dennis Bonaventure & David Okereke are set to be crowned as the Champions despite not completing the season.
They currently sit top of the league, 15 points clear of second-placed KAA Gent, with one game left to play in the regular season, however the Belgian League features a playoff round, used to determine the eventual Champion as well as the teams promoted. The current season will see none of the sixteen teams relegated, and the 2020/2021 season will now feature 18 teams, with the top two teams from the second division granted automatic promotion.
This decision was made following a board of directors’ meeting on Thursday, and awaits official confirmation by representatives of all 24 clubs in the top two tiers of Belgian football by April 15. Seventeen clubs called for cancellation last week.
